How Are College Programmes Presented?
Audioconferences.
Audioconferences are a great way to listen in to a presentation on a particular topic, backed up by pre-reading material which gives you preparation and background information. Being able to listen live provides you with the opportunity to ask questions from your own experience and practice, as well as perhaps get further clarification on an issue. If you can’t take part in the live audioconference, you can order a CD recording of the presentation in your own time (as well as receiving all the pre-reading that goes with it). Audioconferences generally last around 2 hours and the “assessment” is often multi-choice questions or a list of the top points of learning that you have gained. Recordings of all audioconferences from the past few years are available to purchase.
Membership Modules.
The College’s membership modules are more involved learning on a topic and the form of presentation may include an audioconference or workshop (depending on the course). The form of assessment tends to be assignment-based, meaning that you get into the topic to a greater level. Because of the greater work and hence learning, modules are worth 50 credits each. In order to achieve full membership of the College (ie. MNZCP) two modules are mandatory to complete, and these are Practice Pharmacy in a Professional Manner (Law and Ethics – held this year) and Communications, which is being held in 2009.
Basic Practice Updates (‘BPUs’).
Basic Practice Updates are booklets written to cover a basic introduction to a topic. They are not as extensive as a text book, and are not meant to be. They are written to be easily picked up and read - to provide a refresher to what you possibly already know, or to get a general overview to a condition and it’s current treatment.
Workshops.
Certain programmes are presented in a workshop format, where participants attend a specific venue. There are various reasons why a course may be run as a workshop, but the most common is due to a large amount of content to deliver eg. MUR Training Workshops, or where a large attendance is expected eg. the end of year ECP Training workshop in Auckland.
Medicines Use Review (MUR) Training
MUR training days will continue to be provided in 2009, with a particular focus on providing training to areas with a high demand for training. As the College has provided MUR training in most DHB regions, where we go to next can depend on local demand. If you are interested in undertaking MUR training, then please send in an expression of interest form to allow us to notify you if/when a training workshop is next organised in your region.
Emergency Contraceptive Pill Training
ECP training may be completed using a recording of the latest audioconference or attending a workshop or live audioconference..

Drug Interactions
Audioconference held on November 12th 2008
Presented by Bob Buckham, College Programmes Manager and former specialist Drug Information pharmacist
Learn about how drug interactions happen, how to work out if they are important, what to do about them, what resources are available (& which are any good!).
Bob has been told that he has “an easy style of presenting that makes it all seem like common sense” and has presented this topic to PSNZ branch meetings & Symposia, NZHPA Clinical School 2007, Pharmex08, and even medical students.
Listen in and gain a better understanding of drug interactions: from the “simple” interactions to Cytochrome P450 (“CYPs”) through to herbal and the (relatively) newer field of drug transporter-mediated interactions.
This presentation covers the lot and will be of use from beginners to experts!
Supported by readings, case examples and a user-friendly CYP450 interaction table.
Enrol in this audioconference (either live or via CD) and get a %15 discount off Stockley’s Drug Interactions (full or pocket version)!

You’ve requested it, so we’re delivering it!
At the College of Pharmacists, we have interrupted our 2008 course schedule to bring you an introduction to thyroid disease.

Beta-Blockers
Audioconference held on September 17th 2008
Presented by Dr Lynda Bryant: Beta-blockers – what’s new, what’s not?
There has been some controversy regarding the role of beta-blockers in high blood pressure, and this will be explored, including whether or not the effect of beta-blockers can be considered a class effect.
Beta-blockers also seem able to “multitask” and we will also look at the benefits of beta-blockers beyond blood pressure lowering.
